Passing Understanding

A gathering gray column of clouds
Ran the length of the sky
As though supporting one end of the Earth
With the other,
Or fallen in ruin.
The rain soaked limbs and trunks in blackness,
Making the darkening sky Light against the fractile contrast.
So in the somberness and queit
That slows, stills and depressess,
There is in the wooded hillsides
A peace that wrapped inside
Contains an incomprehensible joy.
